Our Mission 

DEVELOPMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY AND TO INCREASE THE SOCIO ECONOMIC STATUS OF LIVESTOCK FARMERS AND OTHER INVOLVED STAKEHOLDERS IN THE WESTERN PROVINCE OF SRI LANKA

Our Objectives & Functions

DOUBLING OF PRESENT LIVESTOCK PRODUCTIONS IN THE PROVINCE WITHIN TEN YEARS FROM YEAR 2002. 

FOLLOWING FUNCTIONS HAVE BEEN UNDERTAKEN BY THE DEPARTMENT TO ACHIVE THIS OBJECTIVE

01.  Prevention of epidemic diseases while ensuring the provision of preventive and curative veterinary health care services.

02 . Provision of animal breeding services.

03 .  Distribution of breeding stock of cattle ,goats ,pigs and poultry to small holders.

04 . Dissemination the action of improved technology to attain maximum production. 

05 .  Introduction of improved methods of livestock development and provision of educational and training facilities for farmers.

Enforcement of statutes including animal act and animal feed act


Five Year Plan of the Department of Animal Production and Health of the Western Province 2005-2009

Background 

Western province plays a major role in livestock sector to supply the increasing demand of animal origin foods.
Department helps to solve burden issues such as poverty, unemployment , environmental pollution e.t.c. in multifarious ways with the assistance of 27 Veterinary Surgeons 02 Livestock officers and 110 Livestock Development Instructors who have scattered throughout the province.

Activities of the department under four major disciplines as follows
1. Development of the Dairy industry
2. Development of the Goat industry
3. Development of the Swine industry
4. Development of the Poultry industry 
Aforesaid each and every discipline has its own visions and objectives
