Department of Local Government

The mission of the Department of Local Government in the Western Province is to guarantee the implementation good governance
within the administrative limits of the Provincial Council by acting as a good friend, guide, philosopher for the local authorities and the recipients of service.

Objectives and Functions
 

1.  To regulate the policy of payments and expenditure of the staffs and the payments of allowances to the members of Local Authorities in the province.

2.  To identify the basic amenities of the public in the province to improve them by releasing grants to the local authorities through development proposals of the province.

3.   To make and improve the efficient service of the local authorities in the province by training them through proper planning and to improve and utilize the human resources.

4.   To discharge the function by making inquiries and supervising the relevant local authorities in the province and when directed by the Hon. Minister-in-charge of Local Government as provided in the respective Acts and Ordinances.

5.   To identify the public requirements of the area and to implement community development Ministry by participating environmental projects.

6.   To achieve the objectives of healthy nation to work in collaboration with the Environmental Ministry by participating environmental projects.

7.  To advice and to uplift the management and discipline control of the local authority and to act as a friend, guide and co-worker.

8.  For better management of the local authority in the province, provide necessary information and guidance.

    * Preparing plans to implement the structure of Department
    * Implementing Training Program for the departmental and Local Authority Officers
    * Coordinating special projects
